I
was pretty excited to get my hands on a
Marilyn
Manson photo pass and review ticket, not only cuz I’ve been a Manson fan
ever since seeing the Antichrist Superstar tour back in ’97, but because opening
act for the night was a Toronto band I’ve anticipated seeing for quite some time
now.
In support of the new album Fino + Bleed and kicking open the Manson show for the whole Canadian tour is Die Mannequin, fronted by charismatic guitarist Care Failure. Accentuated by the contrast of her powerfully tight yet “innocent little schoolgirl” voice and her brutal Gibson/Marshall combo, Care proves to be a kick ass front “man” in a band that is surely strutting it’s way to the top of the heap.
The lame front lighting and toned down sound handed to Die Mannequin didn’t slow down the unflappable Miss Failure, as she proved by jumping off the stage in near darkness during their huge hit, “Do It Or Die”, then tried to scissor jump the barricade all in an attempt to get closer to the crowd and make some new friends.
Standing
half in the photo pit and half in the audience, meanwhile missing hardly a note,
Care just kept right on playing as security looked around as if bewildered by
the whole scene.
Finally she made her way back across the pit and looked around for help to get back up on stage but the politically correct security guys just wouldn’t grab her where they needed to put her back up on there. One guy grabbed her under her arms and tried lifting but would have needed eight foot long arms to lift her high enough to put her ass on the stage.
After two failed attempts to hoist little Miss Failure back up there, I yelled at the guy to “GRAB HER BY THE ASS!!!!!”, as it was the only way to get her back up there! I guess that’s what it took to get the two brain cells charged up enough and buddy finally snapped into action and did what he needed to do to get the job done!
I thoroughly enjoyed my fifteen minutes with Die Mannequin sharing what I thought to be a pretty special moment witnessing them open for Mr. Goth himself. That night, I not only fell deeper in love with Care Failure, but after studying her faithful sidekick, bassist Anthony Bleed and the rest of the band do their thing live, I grew a huge appreciation and respect for the collection of local talent that is Die Mannequin.
