I’ve got a certain amount of respect for any band who has “made it”.  At one point Great White was there.  I know this cuz in the early 90’s I had a room mate who bought into anything that was long haired, wore spandex and attracted pussy.  If the band had droves of female fans, he definitely owned the shit.

“Once Bitten, Twice Shy” was huge and because the chickies liked it a lot, it got heavy rotation on my room mate’s kick ass stereo.  The whole CD was played through literally hundreds of times in the two years I lived at party central but do you think I can remember another tune from that album?

To me it was the same as a whole stack of other bands out there.  The Extremes, Warrants, Firehouses and White Lions all formed one band to me.  Don’t get me wrong, there was some stuff that follows those exact lines of tunage that I thought were pretty fuckin good like Skid Row, Slaughter and Cinderella.  Of course at the time I had been bitten by that grungy little Seattle rat and part of me was very much into the Nirvanas, the Soundgardens and the Alice In Chains out there but I still had this totally metal edge to me that held Pantera, Metallica, Slayer and good ole Ozzy in the highest regard.  These bands were pumping hard through my system and to be quite frank, there was no room in my earspace for hairspray n spandex unless they were attached to lovely set of double D’s.

To me, the only reason the Great Whites were around was to stuff the bras and line the panties of bandwagoneer chicks who weren’t into MUSIC but loyalties lied somewhere in the midriff of the front man of all those bands… til a better looking one popped his head up.

So all that being said, these guys really did a good job.  Musically, they were really tight and there were no fuck ups as far as I could tell.  Jack Russell’s voice was dead on.  He sounded exactly the way he used to back in the day when “Once Bitten” was released.  I was really impressed with his voice.  They had a lot of fans there.  I was blown away how many people were chanting “Great White, Great White” and how many people went nuts when they were announced.  Really surprised.

So have no fear, if you’re lined up to go see a concert like Ted Nugent, and Great White is on the bill, you might just find you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how good the band is.
