I
can appreciate anyone who writes, plays and sings their own music. Hence, I must
give Valerie Anne Poxleitner, AKA Lights, a good review. Not only is her music
all hers, her style, her smile and fans are all hers too. Opening for Hedley,
Miss Lights found herself in a decent sized venue playing to what appeared to me
to be a lot of very young and very interested fans.
When she hit the stage, these kids got up and screamed for her. I hadn’t even heard of her before the day I requested the Hedley pass, but figured I’ll shoot anyone on a big stage and give her a shoot from the hip review if given the chance.
One thing I gotta say on top of being a confident and accomplished stage presence, she’s as cute as they come. Her ear to ear smile is contagious, gorgeous and flirtatious. It’s nice to see someone on stage who’s clearly enjoying being there instead of these people who look burdened by the whole “rock star” thing.
Her music is totally synthesizer based and her tiny but powerful voice sounds as if you’re being sung to by one much younger than the 23 years she’s been on Earth. Speaking of which, she sounds to be quite interested in being one of the first to leave this planet for any other livable floating rock out there. She’s all about space and it’s final frontier, (I’d bet dollars to donuts she’s a Trekkie) the planets and she self describes her music as fantastical/epic/beautiful/emotional.
Well honestly it’s not my cup of tea at all. I’m an old geezer. I love classic rock. 3 chord rock n roll. No synthesizers and as many drum solos as Neil Peart or Dave Lombardo can throw at you. That being said, I like MUSIC. I like anyone who makes music. I totally respect anyone who can get up on stage and play an instrument whilst holding the attention of ADHD ridden teenagers everywhere.
And clearly Miss Lights, is doing something right when it comes to her music and her show. She’s a straight up chick with very few tricks up her sleeve. It’s just her, her music and that smile. Yeah, that smile is an entity on it’s own. After the show I saw a dozen or so fans approach her for autographs and photos and there it was again. I saw it before I saw HER. Like the Cheshire cat. Grinning ear to ear, Lights smile, big, beautiful and genuine.
If you like Lights music, go see her. You’ll like her even more.
