After taking
in the chaos created by the previous bands, Band Called Horse and the Chariot, I
was thinking I might witness something a little more polished or maybe even,
dare I say, commercial in Norma Jean. Having no knowledge of the band other
than what I conjured up at a moment’s notice through Wikipedia and a quick spin
through their Myspace page, I was somewhat surprised to see over 9 million hits,
leading me to believe these guys are a lot more popular than your average band.
Live, Norma Jean is a whole different thing. Very heavy, very raunchy, good n tight, no holds barred. These guys just give er for a good hour and a half. These days I wear earplugs to every show cuz after a few hundred shows with no protection, your ears really start to feel it. Bands like this show no mercy to the old n half deaf. They wanna take the rest of your hearing and BE the band that deafened you.
Kids, kids, everywhere with big black X’s on their hands.. No drink for YOU! Hot little units, I mean smoking hot little chickies with boobs bustin out, tiny mini-skirts with asses hanging out. Ripped up sleazy fishnets and tonnes of makeup. X... X... X... Jailbait. No DRINK for you, no DINK for you!
I almost feel sorry for these bands who’s audiences are made up of 75% jailbait. They must be miserable jerkin off through their whole tour. Back in the day, KISS or Aerosmith could take a roomful of 16 year olds and teach em all how to fuck but these days you’ve got 14 year olds who can teach these bands a trick or two but they’re marked with giant X’s and almost anybody can blow the whistle on ya for even THINKING about touching them so forget it! Backstage is a dangerous place now. For the bands who wish to hang around, they’re like sitting ducks. It’s no wonder most of em fuck off from the prying public as soon as they get the chance anymore.
One cool
thing the band had going on was asking the crowd to pull out their video cameras
and record the song “Kill More Presidents” for a video they are working on.
They just want to compile all the fan footage and create a kickass live looking
video for the fans, by the fans. This kind of interaction is always killer.
When a band involves their fans in something like this it helps create a
connection that stays with you for a long time. 20 years from now the kid can
look at his piece of the video and say that he helped create a video for a
band. It’s a great idea that’s been done before and will continue to be a cool
move for any band to pull.
Not having known anything about these guys, I basically had to look around the room and go by crowd reaction as to whether they were kicking ass or sucking ass and by the crowd response, they really kicked ass. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed the show as they are her favourite band so it was worth it just to get her in there and up to front row right in front of her “true love”, lead singer Corey Brandan.
So even though they’re not my cup of tea, I can appreciate ANY band who can draw a crowd and keep them riveted for an hour and a half.
