I
love it when I go to see a kick ass band and the opening act turns out to be as
good as or even better than the headliner. This isn’t exactly the case for the
Spades vs.
Grady but let’s put it this way. I wasn’t
impatiently waiting for the Spades to leave the stage. I’ve been seeing more
and more 3 piece units out there who are just kickin ass these days and the
Spades are definitely one of them.
They’re working their asses off to fill every bit of headspace so the listener doesn’t notice a hole somewhere in the room. One thing to be said for these guys is that early on in their career they tickled the ear of Gord Sinclair of the Tragically Hip who helped them produce some songs and set them up with real big shows before they’d even released an album.
I saw these guys open for the Hip at Sarnia Bayfest in 2004 and they left a lasting impression. I missed the name of the band so I ended up filing the photos under “that kickin band that opened for the Hip”. Funny that 5 years later I see them on stage opening for one of my favourite performers again, and I thought I recognized them for sure. Small world. I guess they left even more of an impression deep down in the sub cockles of what’s left of my mind.
I’ll just close by saying, do yourself a favour and check out the Spades. These guys are a tight 3 piece rock unit with lotsa piss n vinegar and they seem like a good buncha dudes on top of that. Give em a spin and I’m sure you’ll keep on spinnin.
