Jackhammers Nightclub
Brantford, Ontario
December 26, 2008

I always have a good time getting out and cheering on my good buddies in the Practically Hip.  These guys always nail down a good set of great Canadian music and this night was a little different than all the other times I’ve seen them in that the band was comprised of 2 parts Practically and 3 parts Almost Hip.  Being December 26, some of the guys really wanted to spend time with family which is totally understandable.  Dean Hughes, singer, and his lovely girlfriend signed up for the night but nobody else.  So the guy on the bass, Trent Richer, ever the businessman, pulled a few tricks out of his sleeve and filled up the other spots with guitarist Jeff Astle who pulls off that Stevie Nicks sounding backing vocals and added another dimension to the band that I’d never heard before.  He also roped in Almost Hip’s drummer and other guitarist for the gig.  Despite only having jammed with these guys a few times, the set went off without a hitch and Dean’s Gord Downie antics were kicked up a notch by a large and enthusiastic crowd that night at Jackhammers in Brantford.

Thunderstruck took the stage for all of us who can’t afford the ticket to the real deal and gave us a whole lot more than our money’s worth.  It was nice sitting watching AC/DC last November in the 3rd row from the top of the Roger’s Centre, but I think it was just as enjoyable, if not more, to take in Thunderstruck from the front row.  Singer Blair Briceland and lead guitarist Rich Trevor nail down Brian and Angus as if they were brothers of the famous duo from down under.  Really, those two ARE the show, in particular, Rich/Angus.  These guys were really good and tight.  They had the crowd hopping in no time with all the favourites one would expect from an AC/DC show.  If you balked, or barfed, at the price of an AC/DC ticket, have no fear, for the price of a couple beer, you can take in Thunderstruck, and I promise not only will you get your AC/DC fix, you will NOT be disappointed.
